What I wrote after hearing a 30 seconds extract… JEROME JOURQUIN
Enigma 4 – Gravity Of Love (0.30) - November 1999
First of all, it’s hard to make some notes about only 30 seconds of music.
But that is 30 seconds so pure and so marvelous that I think of being able to say something. I like a lot since the beginning
rhythm that is really very present and I could imagine it as waves. You know waves on ocean when you’re at the limit between
sand and water and when water comes to you again and again through waves.
That is what I feel here: rhythm comes to me again and again from the depth of me to my conscience… Marvelous.
I cannot say something about voices because they are too much deformed by encoding. At 0.15, there is a new (?) voice a
little bit higher as chords are higher too. This part brings us to an upper level of ecstasy, of consciousness?
And what I could notice is that this upper voice is very, very close to the rhythm with the same "waves" moves… Incredible
"Gravity of Love"… God, the 15th of November is so far…
What I’m able to write now I’ve got the full sample…

I’ve got trouble to get in this track because I was wrong. Here is the main sentence I could apply to my first listens.
I was polluted by all Enigma fans who tried so hard to criticize, to analyze those 30 seconds… They tried so hard to say
"it sounds like E1", "it sounds like E2", "it sounds like E3" that they arrived to confuse me.
That’s why my first listens were lost in vain, trying to find similarities between this new sample and old ones. And suddenly
(/happily), it came to my mind something like that "stop losing your time in vain, you’re not listening to some Enigma-like
band with which it’s a job to find in which ways they look like Enigma. No, you are listening to Enigma 4 itself, something
new… never explored, never approached".
Then I was ready to play one more time the sample. My first true listen…
The fact Michael Cretu used some Carmina Burana samples is something that transforms this track. Carmina Burana is one of
the darkest and the most powerful opera I’ve known. This extract gives to music the same force and power that the drums
that suddenly occurs at the end of the Eyes of Truth.
This is this sample we hear first. Without lyrics, it’s impossible to understand what is said. Lyrics of MC begins and as
always, they are so mystic…
Well, I’m sure there are almost as many meanings as there are listeners… For my own, I’m seeing something very deep anchored
in mystic reality, something far away from material world, from our reality, a world Enigma has opened doors to me, and
a world I’ve learnt to love. And each Enigma albums has showed me something else, something new, a new door to open, a new
idea to study, a new force to use. This fourth album is on good way to come into this thought…
I’ve got trouble to react to this song as a musician because I cannot concentrate on it without breaking my chains that
link me to the real world.
SO, Carmina Burana first. Then lyrics of Gravity of Love. What I’d like to know is if "to smell" could have more than one
sense as in French where "sentir" (to smell) and "ressentir" (to feel) are from the same root and the both could be used
to mean "to feel". So, English guy Martyn?.....
Turn around / And smell what you can see / Close your eyes / And it's so clear
This paragraph warns us about danger to believe only what we could see. Everything shining is not necessary gold! And it
reminds me warnings about false prophets, the way to break their bad spells, their bad illusion is just to "close our eyes",
to listen to our soul where truth could enter and wrongness not.
Here's the Mirror / Behind there is a Screen / And with Wings you can get in / Don't think twice...
/ Before you listen to your heart / Follow the trace of a random star
The Mirror, the only artifact that allows seeing yourself. And in fact, this artifact is just a mirror for you, not for
everybody.
For Him it’s a screen, He’s watching you.
And if you had wings, you surely are an angel and goes in His world. But it could also be the wings of love.
In French, we’ve got this sentence "l’amour donne des ailes" which could be translated as "love gives wings". And when it’s
about love, we’ve got another sentence "le Coeur a ses raisons que la raison ne connaît pas" which could be translated as
"Heart’s got reasons (to act like that) that Reason doesn’t know". But before making first step to Him, why not to believe
in chance and make some wish by seeing some shooting star.
What you need / And everything you feel / Is just the question of the day / In the eye of the storm...
/ You can see the lonely door! / The experience of survival... / Is the key to the GRAVITY OF LOVE.
Then we know we enter main part of the song through rhythm that begins. And far away from material thoughts such as "why
can’t I have this or that?" "How could I be better?" etc, there are more things essential to discover. And a way to bring
them to the light is to break free, to break links that bound you to the ground.
This is supported by music that elevates just before "In the eye of the storm". Then you’ll be able to go further, far beyond
you and to realize light is where it has always been: in yourself.
The path of excess leads to / The tower of Wisdom
It’s a very interesting sentence… I still have trouble to understand how excess could lead to wisdom but I think I could
approach more this meaning. Just a matter of strong reflection…
Time to think about it / It’s the chance to live your life / And discover what it is / It’s the GRAVITY
OF LOVE.
Now you got to your real nature, your own you, it’s time to take a break and analyze what you are. You’re so lucky to finally
come to this state of full alert about what you exactly are. It’s the chance to be finally you. By living under your own
rules, the ones dictated by your own you, you’d be able to live under Love rules, to be in Love and to go further and further
in this wonderful state of conscience…
Don't just be wrong / Can you hear the voice / Find the one who will guide you... / To the limits of
your choice / But if you where in the eye of the storm / Just think about the lonely door / The experience of survival /
Is the key to the GRAVITY OF LOVE.
A paragraph that remembers me in force what the ones of Return to Innocence were. This feeling about state of conscience
is so big that this cannot be false! It must be reality, Truth. And finally, the one you are searching for is not so inaccessible,
you’re able to find Him because He is your guide, the one who will teach how to get further and further. Because there are
not thousand of ways; just one-way. More or less as the way of Middle state: not too much, not too less.
As I said, Enigma’s lyrics have always been very meaningful. Each people listening to it entered his own world, and lyrics
seem to have been written for him.
I’m not a fanatic catholic or something like that but someone very attracted by religions study. And each time I’ve watched
Enigma video clips, each time I’ve listened to its lyrics, I’ve seen what I wanted, that is to say religious stuff, some
legends, many myths, etc.
One more time, I saw it in these lyrics. For me, it appears as a quest, a quest of someone who was searching for him. He
found him by going through his own limits, and beyond the darkness of incomprehension, there was the light of answers and
there he found what he was searching for: his essence.
This essence is as pure as crystal, it’s the more purified state of comprehension: Love.
Love of himself, love of his conditions, love of his God (whatever His name is), love of the world around him and the key
was Wisdom. Wisdom to come back to reality to see Humanity in its whole distress and to guide him as someone or something
guide him to the exit of the Plato’s Cavern. This movie I’ve got in mind reminds me a lot Siddârtha Gautama’s Legend, the
entire story of the Buddha.
And by the way, it reminds me one more time The Eyes of Truth and its so Indian / Tibetan atmosphere…
Here is what I’ve got in mind for now 3 days during which I’ve listened this song in loop, even my computer off because
I think I cannot forget it more than one second, my mind’s got impregnated of it and I think it’s going to last at least
for 3 years…
What is "funny" to me in those lyrics is that I saw two levels.
One in which the GRAVITY OF LOVE is a feeling between two beings, whatever their sexes are. The power of the love at first
sight is representing. The quest for the beloved half is a hard task in which we have to find everywhere as in we. The feeling
represents here is something no one is able to control, something that takes you in its weirdness and leaves you without
will. A tornado, a magic Tornado.
A second in which the GRAVITY OF LOVE is a feeling between a being and his Creator. It is the vision I tried to explain
higher.
Further than meaning, this track IS by Enigma, no doubt about it. Although many people of the Enigma Mailing List tried
to confuse everyone by saying the 30 sec. extract they heard was just weak, I discovered in Gravity Of Love another great
and powerful track of my so unbelievable band. This track is just like an explosion, from the beginning when it comes softly
to the end when it comes upper and upper to some incredible level of highness, this track is perfect, this track is beautiful
and this track is better than all I could dream of. Enigma 4 is here and no way to deny!
