Gravity Of Love is an accomplished Enigmatic song and journey, where the music, the sounds, the vocals and the lyrics reveal
a richly articulated composition.
What makes this single different and important is the power of its essence. This song is not about sexual desire, religion
and freedom (Sadeness), its not just about self-confidence and self discovery (Return To Innocence) and finally its not
as abstract as Beyond The Invisible.
In Gravity of love, Michael Cretu is not a layman philosopher but he shows an important analytical quest of how can a person
reach trancendence and live the substance of love.
The lyrics of the song may suggest a self-journey:
Turn Around and Smell what you can See
....is the beginning of the journey, where a person eagerly senses what surrounds him and enters a learning process. One
can learn infinite things from everyday life and experience, from friends and society as well as from nature.
However all the daily information and knowledge we gain is somehow raw. All this raw knowledge must be realized and associated
with our inner self.
Close your eyes and its so clear
Its the moment you return to yourself in order to find how you really feel about everything that surrounds you. At this
point there's "the mirror", the surface where you can see the image of yourself.
Your aim though is not to concentrate on your image but to get into the "screen", to find out what is behind your image,
what your image really stands for. The mirror is like an invitation to transcend your image, to transcend all your ideas
based on how things look like and listen to what your heart feels about everything.
The realization of yourself is "the lonely door", the trip you have to do on your own and in a way is like an auto-solitude
situation.
In this "exile" situation, however, you will be able to discover yourself, your needs, what you desire and what are your
dreams. Then, when you will have learnt what you want from life, you will live life in the path of excess.
From your auto-solitude you will be back in "the experience of survival" and when you know yourself, you can also be extravagant
with yourself. The result of your excess, of your fight to live under your own rules, of your fight to fulfill your dreams,
will be the state of love.
Love is a thing you cannot grasp but certainly you can feel its gravity. And its not a frivolous love but the substance
of love you will earn when you fight to transcend yourself and reach the point where in somebody you love, you'll "extend"
yourself and your limits. That's maybe the destination of the journey and the destination of everyone: to extend themselves
through the Gravity of Love.
Its the first time I feel that the lyrics have a basic role in an Enigma song, rather than being just a vocal-element along
with the music and the beats.
What is so unique and stunning, though, in Gravity of Love, is how Ruth Ann Boyle interpreters the lyrics. Her voice is
sensitive, powerful, extremely expressive and fits perfectly in the song's atmosphere. After all this is not a sensual song
in terms of Sadeness, Mea Culpa or T.N.T. For The Brain but a spiritual and aggressively sensitive song.
The percussion is excellent, the symphonic arrangement is very Wagnerian and the Carmina Burana sample with its magnificence
accompany Ruth Ann's vocals, which in my opinion, is the highlight of Gravity of Love.
The introduction of the song with all the typical Cretu sound effects clearly states that Enigma Sound hasn't really changed
so much but it has evolved into something more subtle and soothing.
Enigma sound is now more mature and delicate than it used to be in previous singles, while i have to admit the lack of any
new stylistic sound trademark.
The Remixes are very well made. Judgment Day Club Mix has the TAAW progressive sound and the use of various sounds effects
that make it superb.
Dark Vocal Club Mix is a commercial-orientated club mix that uses various trance sounds from Ibiza-style trance tracks but
i believe it is done really good and its really danceable.
Overall, Gravity Of Love is a stunning pure Enigma song, a new atmospheric and haunting journey for the senses and the mind
and a very powerful manifest of self-transcendence and love.
Regarding commercial success, this is not a song about "livin la vida loca" or teenage "Britney-pop" illusions, but more
about living, realizing and enjoying your life and not consuming images ( what the charts really need).
